 Mercedes-Benz History | Mercedes-Benz by Milwaukee

Mercedes has an incredible history, which spans over 100 years. Although Mercedes-Benz is famous for their cars and SUV’s, the German company started out building motorcycles. Karl Benz, one of the founders of Mercedes-Benz, developed the first motorcycle in 1886 that could be powered by a gasoline engine. In 1893, Benz took his first step into the future by creating their first four wheeled vehicle called the Victoria.

Mercedes impact on history continued into 1894, when the first automobile called the Benz Velo was produced and participated in the first car race ever recorded. From the beginning, the company was poised to be more than just another car manufacturer. Another milestone occurred just a year later, when Mr. Benz released his first truck design. While Mr. Benz was busy developing his models, Gottlieb Daimler was busy producing his own vehicles, including his literal translation of a “horseless carriage” in 1886.

Amazingly, both gentlemen operated successful companies until after World War I. The aftermath of the war made it difficult for the automakers to stay afloat. It was decided that a merger between the two companies was the only way to survive. The merger didn’t occur right away. In fact, a first attempt in 1919 failed. By 1924, the merger was a last ditch effort to save both companies, which were finding it almost impossible to compete with the U.S. manufacturers. The merger was finalized in 1926 with the creation of Mercedes-Benz. Now that the two companies had merged, they had to come up with a plan to save the company. The reinvention began with the development of the famous three star medallion with a laurel, which is found on Mercedes vehicles today.

Now that a name was in place and a new insignia in place to identify the company, the question of how to compete with the U.S. market needed to be answered. Because performance had always been an important feature for both models, it seemed logical for the new company to focus on vehicles that offered outstanding performance and unmatched luxury. The real break didn’t happen until 1958, when Mercedes-Benz entered into a deal with Studebaker to distribute their vehicles in the U.S. market. This was a huge win for Mercedes-Benz. Today, Mercedes-Benz offers 19 different classes of vehicles, which range from luxury sedans, SUV’s, and MPV’s to a sporty roadster. In addition, Mercedes has expanded to include commercial vehicles. The company has come a long way from its archaic beginnings in the 19th Century.
